Salicylic acid is primarily associated with acne treatment and skincare exfoliation. But it has a well-established role in scalp care, and understanding what it does explains why it appears in scalp scrubs and treatments targeting dandruff, product buildup, and follicle congestion.
What Salicylic Acid Is
Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), a class of exfoliating acids characterised by their oil-solubility. Unlike alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as glycolic and lactic acid, which are water-soluble and work on the skin surface, BHAs can penetrate into pores and follicle openings because they dissolve in sebum.
Salicylic acid occurs naturally in willow bark (Salix species) and in small amounts in other plants. It is a well-characterised compound with a long history of use in dermatology. The salicylic acid used in cosmetic formulations is typically produced through synthesis, though naturally-derived versions exist. In its natural form it is classified as a COSMOS-approved ingredient at appropriate concentrations.
What It Does on the Scalp
On the scalp, salicylic acid performs several functions:
- Keratolytic action. It dissolves the bonds between dead skin cells (corneocytes) in the stratum corneum, facilitating their removal. This is particularly relevant for the scalp, where dead skin cells can accumulate as flakes or as a layer that sits on the scalp surface and around follicle openings.
- Follicle clearing. Because it is oil-soluble, salicylic acid can penetrate into follicle openings where sebum, dead skin cells, and product residue accumulate. This clearing action reduces the conditions that favour fungal overgrowth and follicle congestion.
- Anti-inflammatory effect. Salicylic acid has mild anti-inflammatory properties, which is relevant for scalp conditions involving redness and irritation associated with dandruff or seborrhoeic dermatitis.
- Antifungal contribution. At higher concentrations, salicylic acid has demonstrated antifungal activity. In scalp scrub concentrations (typically 0.-%), the contribution to Malassezia control is modest but present.
How It Works in a Scalp Scrub
In a scalp scrub, salicylic acid is combined with physical exfoliants (typically fine mineral or plant-derived particles). The combination provides complementary action: physical exfoliants remove surface debris mechanically, while salicylic acid works chemically on the follicle openings and intercellular bonds that physical scrubbing alone cannot reach.
Contact time matters. A scrub applied for one to two minutes before rinsing gives salicylic acid time to work, whereas a shampoo rinsed immediately has minimal chemical exfoliation contact time.
Concentration and Safety
In the EU and UK, salicylic acid in cosmetic products (other than hair removal products) is permitted at concentrations up to 2% as a cosmetic ingredient, under EU Cosmetic Regulation Annex III. At concentrations of 0.-%, it is considered safe for regular scalp use. It is not recommended for use on broken or inflamed skin, and is not suitable for use during pregnancy at higher concentrations (the typical scalp scrub concentration is considered low-risk, but consultation with a healthcare provider is appropriate during pregnancy).

Can salicylic acid damage hair?
At cosmetic concentrations (0.-%), salicylic acid does not damage the hair shaft when used as directed. It is applied to the scalp and rinsed away. Prolonged contact of high-concentration salicylic acid formulations with the hair shaft over time could theoretically affect the protein structure, but this is not a concern with normal use of scalp scrubs at standard concentrations.
Is salicylic acid safe for colour-treated hair?
Scalp application of salicylic acid at normal concentrations is generally considered safe with colour-treated hair, as it is applied to the scalp rather than the lengths. However, any exfoliating treatment applied to colour-treated lengths could affect colour longevity. Keep scalp scrub application focused on the scalp itself rather than the hair lengths.
What is the difference between BHA and AHA exfoliants?
Alpha-hydroxy acids (AHAs), glycolic acid, lactic acid, mandelic acid, re water-soluble and work primarily on the skin surface, exfoliating the outermost layer of the stratum corneum. Can I use salicylic acid on my scalp every day?

Weekly or fortnightly use is appropriate for maintaining scalp health; daily use should only be considered under dermatological guidance for specific scalp conditions.
